Venezuela's VP throws cold water on Trump's solution for running the country

• Trump told reporters Saturday that he expects the U.S. to run Venezuela temporarily, and that Rodríguez had been sworn in as president. Venezuela has not announced that Rodríguez has taken the oath of office.
• It is also unclear where Rodríguez currently is. Some media reports have placed her in Russia, others in Caracas.

Between the lines: Trump said during Saturday's press conference that Rodríguez would have to cooperate with U.S. officials, saying "she really doesn't have a choice."

• He added that Rodríguez had talked to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the vice president stated Venezuela would "do whatever" the U.S. needed, and that no U.S. troops would be on the ground "if the vice president does what we want."
• But in her televised speech, Rodríguez pushed back on Trump's assertion that Venezuela would give in to the U.S.' request, saying: "If there's something that the Venezuelan people and the country know very clearly, we will never return to being slaves."
• She also left the door open to a dialogue with the Trump administration, calling for "respectful relations," according to the Associated Press.

• "It is the only thing we will accept for a type of relationship after having attacked (Venezuela)."

Worth noting: Rodríguez also used the speech to call for proof of life from Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, as well as their release from U.S. custody.

• Maduro and Flores are expected to be detained in federal prison in New York, though it's unclear if they've arrived at the facility.
• Both are charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and two weapons counts, according to the indictment.
