St. Paul's Ward 4 voting for new City Council member

Why it matters: Ward 4 has been really going through it — and the new council member will have to deal with all of it.

• The Snelling-University transit hub is gripped by tension over homelessness and crime. Midway's long-struggling Cub Foods is closing. Development around the University of St. Thomas is causing friction with neighbors.

State of play: The ward's former representative, Council President Mitra Jalali, announced her resignation in January for health reasons.

• Four candidates are running to serve the remainder of her term, which runs through 2028.

Here's who wants the job:

• Chauntyll Allen is a St. Paul School Board member and community organizer.
• Molly Coleman leads a judicial reform advocacy organization and is also the daughter of former Mayor Chris Coleman.
• Cole Hanson works in public health and, until recently, was board president of the local district council, the Hamline Midway Coalition.
• Carolyn Will is a strategic public relations consultant who was active in an organization seeking to block a bike trail along Summit Avenue.

What's next: Before election day, voters can cast ballots by mail or at the Ramsey County administration building on St. Paul's West Side.

• Interim Ward 4 Council Member Matt Privratsky will serve until the election results are finalized in August or September.
