Pentagon withdraws 2,000 California National Guard troops from LA

Driving the news: "Thanks to our troops who stepped up to answer the call, the lawlessness in Los Angeles is subsiding," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in an email statement.

• "As such, the Secretary has ordered the release of 2,000 California National Guardsmen (79th IBCT) from the federal protection mission."

State of play: City and state leaders, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, decried the federal government's deployment of the military.

• Newsom filed a lawsuit last month in an attempt to block the military deployment to LA, while the Department of Justice alleged in a lawsuit against the city that its sanctuary policies led to "lawlessness, rioting, looting, and vandalism."

What they're saying: Bass called the pulling of the Guard a "retreat" in a Tuesday statement.

• "This happened because the people of Los Angeles stood united and stood strong," she said.
• "We organized peaceful protests, we came together at rallies, we took the Trump administration to court — all of this led to today's retreat."
