Sam Altman: OpenAI wants to get to $1 trillion a year in infrastructure spend

Yes, but: That's just the starting point, Altman said. Over time, the company would like to have in place a technical and financial apparatus that would allow it to build a gigawatt of new capacity per week at a cost of around $20 billion per gigawatt.

Reality check: Altman said the company still faces technical and financial hurdles to get to that lofty goal.

• "This is where we would like to go and over the coming months we're going to do a lot of work to see if we can get here," Altman said.
• Altman's comments came during a livestream to discuss the restructuring finalized Tuesday.

The big picture: To spend that much, ultimately, OpenAI will have to generate far more revenue.

• In a question-and-answer session during the livestream, Altman said that enterprise customers will be a big revenue driver, but he also sees ways to bring in funds from consumers, beyond monthly paid subscriptions.

• "Eventually we need to get to hundreds of billions a year in revenue, and we're on a pretty steep curve towards that," Altman added.
• As for whether he plans to take OpenAI public, Altman said an initial public offering is likely eventually, but there is no specific plan or timeframe.
• "I think it's fair to say it is the most likely path for us given the capital needs that we'll have and, sort of, the size of the company," he said.
