Anthropic's third-quarter revenue surged to nearly $17 billion, while its contractual spending agreements on AI infrastructure ballooned to $900 billion, per its amended pre-IPO paperwork.
Why it matters: It's taking a lot of cash to generate those returns.
Driving the news: Anthropic disclosed approximately $895.4 billion in aggregate spending commitments under purchase agreements and leases, all substantially tied to compute and infrastructure.
- Approximately $447.5 billion is expected to be incurred by the end of 2030, with substantially all of the remaining $447.9 billion expected between 2031 and 2045.
- Nearly $70 billion is due within the 12 months following September 30, 2026.
- The commitments include agreements entered into after September 30, as well as leases that have not yet commenced.
Zoom in: Here are three more things we learned in the amended paperwork that were not previously known:
- Charitable contributions: Anthropic has $2.1 billion in donation matching expenses this year, 6% of its operating expenses for the period, which it expects will increase in the future.
- Zero data retention (ZDR): Anthropic can't retain prompts or outputs from a substantial share of traffic, potentially conflicting with its safety goals. It warns ZDR could become "incompatible" with certain advanced models, which could force users to use less than frontier intelligence, pushing customers toward competitors with fewer monitoring requirements.
- Recursive self improvement: The amended paperwork mentions that they company is close to dramatically accelerated progress due to AI, and describes an improvement loop in which models get better thanks to Claude.
The big picture: The market of capital to support AI infrastructure spend is starting to dry up, per a slew of recent reports, and the FT reports Anthropic may not secure an investment grade rating on its debt.
- OpenAI is struggling to reach its latest funding goals, reportedly slashing its target by $10 billion.
The other side: Revenue surged with all that spend.
- Third-quarter revenue reached $17 billion, up nearly 47% from $11.6 billion in the prior quarter and more than 12-fold from a year earlier.
- The company generated $33.2 billion in revenue during the first nine months of 2026, compared with $2.5 billion a year earlier.
- Anthropic held $131.8 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of September, leaving its cash on hand rivaling some of the biggest institutions in the world, including Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway per CNBC.
The bottom line: Anthropic's revenue is soaring right alongside its burgeoning financial commitments.
