Phil Weiser wins Colorado's governor's race

State of play: The Associated Press declared Weiser the winner just 1 minute after polls closed at 7pm.

• Weiser, the current attorney general, defeated Republican candidate Victor Marx with about 60% in early vote counts, according to preliminary results just after polls closed.

The big picture: Weiser takes the seat from Gov. Jared Polis, who is term-limited after eight years in the job.

• Weiser's victory means Democrats will have held the governorship for 20 consecutive years and counting. The last Republican to win the job, Gov. Bill Owens, left office in January 2007.

Between the lines: From the start, Democrats held the edge in the race, but Weiser's chances only increased after Republicans nominated political unknown Victor Marx of Colorado Springs.

• Marx's controversial past and fundraising troubles made it difficult for him to gain steam. He raised $4.4 million but never ran a single campaign television ad.

Weiser collected $9.3 million through Monday, outraising most of the four statewide Republican candidates combined.

What we're watching: Weiser made a number of promises on the campaign trail, including 40,000 new affordable homes and a rewrite of the state's labor rules to make it easier for unions to collect member fees.

• His nearly 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration continue to evolve in court.
