At 5 years old, Bryce Wettstein started skateboarding at the Encinitas YMCA. Fifteen years later, she still lives in her hometown, but now she's looking to medal in skateboarding at the Summer Olympics in Paris.
Zoom in: Between sessions, the MiraCosta College student shared with Axios her perfect San Diego day:
🏄 Morning activity: Wettstein said she likes to start off at her favorite surf spot, Grandview in Leucadia — or doing ballet at the Encinitas YMCA.
- "I really love meeting people — Sometimes you meet someone and it turns your day… It's just the best," she said.
🥑 Breakfast: Keeping with the SoCal vibe, Wettstein said her favorite morning meal is avocado toast — especially from Pannikin, "the old train station, the big yellow cafe."
- She's right. The Pannikin building was built in 1887 as the Encinitas train station for the old Southern Railroad Company.
🕊️ Afternoon activity: Wettstein said she's trying to remind herself to save time to do nothing in particular.
- "I'm trying to learn how to not think so much about all the things I want to do and be like, 'Bryce, just go and have fun doing what you're doing and being in the moment,'" she said.
🐟🌮 Lunch: If she's not eating at home, Wettstein said she'll probably end up at Wahoo's for fish tacos.
- "I never read the menu," she said. "Like, I just know what I want."
🎶 Evening activity: Wettstein plays the ukulele and sings, so at night she likes to drop into a couple places where she plays: The Roxy and Duck Foot Brewing Co.'s Leucadia location.
- "The Roxy, they let me play music there, and I'm so grateful."
- "I also play at this place called Duck Foot on the 101; they have this little microphone in the back and they have bingo night there," she said.
🍣 For dinner, Wettstein's favorite spot is Sushi Lounge, which she knows well because it's right next to the skatepark Poods.
🍦 Evening: She finishes off the day with some ice cream at Handel's.
